Marjean Gries, age 64 of Perry, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Unity Point Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Perry High School Gymnasium in Perry. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Perry High School Gymnasium in Perry. Burial will be in the Violet Hill Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017, Perry IA. Memorials will be given to a Memorial Fund set up for a Perry Children's Christmas Fund and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home.


Marjean Gayle Gries was born on June 22, 1952 at Perry, IA to Gaylord LeRoy and Marjorie Eloise (Sulgrove) Roberts. She attended school at Perry High School graduating with the class of 1970. She was All Conference and All State in basketball and a drum majorette for Perry High School Marching Band. After high school, she graduated from Northwest Missouri State in 1975, where she ran in track. While in college she worked as a life guard and manager of the Perry Municipal Pool and head coach of the Perry Swim Team. She was united in marriage to Tommy George Gries at the United Methodist Church in Perry on December 22, 1984. She worked as a teacher in the Perry School System for 34 years where she taught Elementary Physical Education, Tinikling, Rope Jumping and coach for softball and basketball. She took some of her students to the National Jump Roping Championship.

She was a member of the Perry School Board. She was presented the Teacher of the Year Award for the school year of 2002-2003 by Governor Vilsack. She enjoyed growing up on the acreage where she spent many hours outside, riding horses and caring for animals. She loved her dogs Mocha and Izzy and especially being with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gaylord and Marjorie Roberts, brother Dennis Roberts and niece-in-law, Kimberly Roberts.

She is survived by her husband Tom Gries, Perry, IA, son, Casey (Kelly) Baldwin, Perry, IA, step children, Debora (Kirk) Gries Crawford, Liberty, MO, Daniel Gries, Marion, IA and Darcy Gries Yakish, Solon, IA, grandchildren, Reagan, Declan and Tenley Baldwin, Perry, IA, step grandchildren, Allison, Ashley, Peyton, Brooklyn, Emersyn, Logan and Carson, siblings, Jerry (Hollie) Roberts, Jefferson, IA, and a sister-in-law Jo Ann Roberts of Perry, IA.
