Doris was born March 9, 1925 on a farm near Toledo, IA from Roy and Velma Harris. She was raised on multiple farms that her dad was renting, with some hard time during the great depression. She enjoyed riding horses on the farm while working hard at a very young age .
She played clarinet in the band, catcher on the softball team, and also was a cheer leader. She remembers many fun summers with her brother Laverne, and her younger sister Carla at her grand-parents’ house. She moved to Perry when she was a junior and graduated high school at St Patrick’s in 1942.
After high school she remained in Perry and worked as a bookkeeper. She met Louie in 1941. They were married on August 5, 1946 shortly after his return from the war. When living on a farm near Yale, they were blessed with two sons, Ron, in 1949 and Curt in 1955.
Doris and Louis bought the Perry Sales Pavilion in 1969. They owned and operated the barn, where Doris worked as a bookkeeper, and head chef, making delicious pies, chicken noodle soup, and hot beef sandwiches. She served for many years on the Perry State Bank board. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and bridge and cherished her family.
She’s survived by her husband of 73 years, Louie, her sister Carla Swensen, her two sons, Ron and Curt, her daughters-in-law, her five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
